Aidan Elizabeth's paintings
I create paintings using figurative and objective imagery to represent abstract ideas. The human body is a large part of my visual language, as my artistic practice is largely based upon my interest in physiology and other sciences. I’m particularly interested in the mortuary sciences and the nature of decomposition, much of my work is built around the concept of universal decomposition. Universal decomposition is the idea that everyone and everything, no matter what, will break down and become something new. This idea is also supported by many apocalyptic premonitions, where the world must be fully ended to start anew. Only from complete destruction and a blank slate can creation arise. That is why many of my paintings touch upon themes of death, stagnation, inaction, change, and rebirth. Materiality is a large factor in my studio practice, I’m enamored by textures and strive to sculpt them with my brush. Light is a large character within my work, I like to include my light sources within my image and have my forms and texture react to the light I’ve created. When I’m not creating light I embellish my images with other materials like sequins and beads, that will react to the light of their environment. My goal as an artist is to generate images that represent the state of the world today and the conditions of the being within it in the context of a rapidly approaching end.
